REAL WORLD Essential Questions: Why would it be necessary to be able to rhetorically analyze text and speeches for the author's use of rhetorical devices in determining author's purpose? Why would it be necessary to be able to use rhetorical devices effectively when you are the author/speaker?

Objectives:

  • Content Objective: In my study of reading strategies and rhetorical devices, I will be able to rhetorically analyze a text.

  • Language Objective: I will show what I have learned by writing responses to reading.

Focus:

  • Rhetorical Analysis: Parallelism, Annotating a text for rhetorical devices, and Analytical Writing through a quote weave

Handouts:

  1. "PARALLELISM"

  2. "Two Views of the Mississippi" by Mark Twain

  3. "Two Views of the Mississippi' Quote Weave"

Activities:

  1. Take Vocabulary #2 Quiz (daily quiz grade)

  2. Parallelism mini lesson w/ notes

  3. Parallelism practice in houses (minor grade)

  4. Read/Annotate "Two Views of the Mississippi"

  5. Begin Quote weave in houses.

Homework:

  1. Complete reading/annotation of "Two Views of the Mississippi"
