REAL WORLD Essential Questions: Why would it be necessary to be able to rhetorically analyze text and speeches for the author's use of rhetorical devices in determining author's purpose? Why would it be necessary to be able to use rhetorical devices effectively when you are the author/speaker?

Objectives:

  • Content Objective: In my study of reading strategies and rhetorical devices, I will be able to rhetorically analyze a text.

  • Language Objective: I will show what I have learned by writing responses to reading.

  • Thesis Statement & Essay Outlining

Handouts:

  • "Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts"

  • Essay Exam Outline

  • Rhetorical Triangle Analysis for "Grant & Lee..."

  • Unit 4 Vocab Study Guide

Activities:

  1. Thesis Focus Discussion (con't from last class)

  2. Read "Grant & Lee..." and make initial annotations

  3. Essay Exam Outline Review

Homework:

Complete your Exam Outline Review and annotate "Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts" for any and all rhetorical devices. Be prepared to write an essay over the following prompt next class period:

Analyze the rhetorical devices Catton uses to make his claims about the differences and similarities between Lee and Grant.

Unit 4 Vocab Quiz will be November 30th (Red) and December 1st (Blue)
